You can call Telehealth Ontario to talk to a nurse in order to determine how urgent your problem is.  The call is free and you can call 24 hours a day. The nurse will ask you for your name, telephone number and address, but you do not have to provide this information. All information you provide remains confidential.

Callers receive free, confidential advice from registered nurses. Callers can ask nurses questions about health concerns, or describe symptoms to help determine whether they should head immediately to an emergency room, whether their condition can wait for a visit to their health care professional the next day, or whether they can look after themselves at home. People can call Telehealth Ontario anonymously, and no address or health card is needed. Calls can be placed from pay phones without any charge

Community Health Centres do not require health insurance (or OHIP). A community health centre provides doctors, nurse practitioners, a registered nurse, a social worker, health and promoters. You must make an appointment. Each centre is different – some have other programs, such as social groups, the arts and cooking groups.

  • MUST MEET ALL CRITERIA Example: You must fill out an application form. This information will be kept strictly confidential. For more details on issues surrounding confidentiality, please view the front of this guide.
  • WAITING LISTS: While Community Health Centres provide services to people without health insurance, many have lengthy waiting lists.

Service description:
Nursing Care - Staff nurses, working with volunteers, operate scheduled clinics in drop-in centres and shelters. Nursing outreach is designed to locate people living outdoors, on the street - people who tend not to go to the locations where scheduled clinics occur.
Mental Health Support - For clients who also have mental health problems we provide intensive support, including crisis intervention and case management.
HIV/AIDS Prevention - Our clients are given preventive education, assistance with health problems and referral to other services. Condom distribution, a needle exchange and street outreach services are part of this program.
I.D. Replacement - We help our clients to obtain birth certificates, Social Insurance cards, Ontario Health Cards, landed immigration documents, and other documents necessary in dealing with modern bureaucracies.
Secure Mail Service - Homeless people by definition lack the postal address required to qualify for certain services. Street Health will provide the necessary mailing address and handle a person's mail.
I.D. Storage - The constant problem of loss or theft of identification documents among homeless and underhoused people is addressed by providing a secure, managed location for the storage of such documents.
Hepatitis C Support - This program provides support for homeless people with hepatitis C (Hep C). Services include Hep C education, referrals and accompaniment to health and social service appointments, the provision of supportive counselling, harm reduction supplies and information, and a weekly support group. The program also offers workshops and information on Hep C to a wide range of service providers in Greater Toronto.
Clothing and Sleeping Bag Distribution - Clean donated clothing is distributed, as are new and professionally-cleaned used sleeping bags.
