A number of important events for the Community Social Planning Council of Toronto are taking place over the next month:

 

HRSDC/Service Canada Community Update

The CSPC-T is sponsoring a session to provide community-based employment and training organizations with an update on the activities of the Federal Voluntary Sector Advisory Committee on Employment.  This meeting will also introduce the new Fairness Advisor, Claire Thifault.  To confirm attendance at this meeting, please email mmary@cspc.toronto.on.ca.

 

Mayoralty Candidates Forum on Seniors Issues

“Blue Ribbon Panel” Session

The Federal government has established a panel, chaired by United Way of Greater Toronto President Frances Lankin, to make recommendations regarding the administration of the Federal governments Grants and Contributions programs.  This session will provide an opportunity for community organizations to gain an understanding of the consultative process to date, the participation of organizations such as Imagine Canada in the process, and the remaining opportunities for the community sector to be informed and engaged in this process.  Agenda and speaker details to be confirmed.

 

CSPC-T Strategic Planning Process Community Consultation

The Community Social Planning Council of Toronto is engaged in a strategic planning process to shape its work for 2007-2010. A critical aspect of that process is hearing what our communities feel should be our priorities for the next few years.  We want you to be a part of that process – if you are interested, please contact mmary@cspc.toronto.on.ca, to receive additional information. 

 

The CanadaOntario Immigration Agreement – A “Progress Report.”

On March 28, the CSPC-T, in collaboration with six Ontario-wide organizations ETFO (Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario), OCASI (Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants), CERIS (Joint Centre of Excellence in Research on Immigration and Settlement), People for Education, OPSBA (Ontario Public School Boards Association) and the Social Planning Network of Ontario) hosted a forum on the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement.  Six months later, what has happened?  This forum will provide an opportunity to share information on the progress that has taken place, and to share strategies to better address the needs of newcomers.  Agenda details and speakers to follow shortly. 

 

 

Recent Publications from the Council

 

Extend the Municipal Franchise:  Inclusive Cities Canada

Inclusive Cities Canada, a joint project of five Social Planning Councils across Canada, is releasing a series of papers on key issues of social inclusion.  One of the first of these papers, authored by Ryerson University professor Myer Siemiatycki, focuses on the issue of extending the municipal franchise to non-citizen residents of Toronto.  This paper received substantial media attention on its release last week, and can be accessed on the CSPC-T website at www.socialplanningtoronto.org  and the Inclusive Cities website at http://inclusivecities.ca/publication/reports/2006/toronto-report.pdf

 

Impact of the Federal Cuts on Toronto

The CSPC-T has prepared a document outlining the impact of the recently-announced $1 billion federal government cuts in Toronto, which was circulated at the community forum on the cuts hosted by the Council on October 11.  That document is available on the CSPC-T website at www.socialplanningtoronto.org
