The Spring 2009 Community Development Institute gives workers in the social service sector and activists in the community sector:

  • An opportunity to gain real support for their efforts
  • To learn or revisit theoretical and foundational knowledge
  • Share and transform their experiences and learnings in the field
  • Unpack, analyze, and synthesize their feelings and attitudes going into the work or coming out of their experiences
  • Network for greater coordination and movement building
  • Have fun with others who are doing similar or complementary work

Guest Speakers

  • Alison Mathie – Participatory development educator, speaking about Moses Coady and the Antigonish movement: cooperatives and community development in Canada
  • D’Arcy Martin – Educator and unionist, speaking about Paulo Freire (“Pedagogy of the Oppressed”) on popular education, democratic participation, and community organizing
  • Deborah Barndt – Popular educator and artist, speaking about Myles Horton and the Highlander Center he founded to organize workers and communities for democracy in action
