North York residents speak out against proposed cuts to transit and affordable housing during Community Budget Briefing.

Over 80 residents gathered in North York Memorial Hall last night to learn about the upcoming 2017 City Budget and its impact on transit, housing, shelters and the City's own Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Sean Meagher, Executive Director of Social Planning Toronto presented on the challenges faced by the proposed across-the-board 2.6% budget cuts and its impact on day-to-day services in the city.

“We’ve heard from both front line workers and the top City staffers that these cuts will impact services and hurt residents”, Meagher said. “Residents should be very concerned, as cuts could result in the closing of shelters, longer waits for the TTC and the cancellation of student nutrition programs across the city.”

The event, organized by the Commitment2Community Coalition, also organized residents to take action with their local Councillor and City Hall.
