By Cutty Duncan, SPT Project Coordinator – ANC Mount Dennis

Resident Planning
Since fall 2006, Social Planning Toronto has been leading an Action for Neighbourhood Change (ANC) project in the Mount Dennis area.  ANC’s goal is to strengthen high need, underserved neighbourhoods in Toronto by bringing residents together to share ideas and work with the rest of the community on strategies to improve neighbourhood conditions. There are 13 ANC projects in the city, all funded and supported by United Way Toronto.

ANC Mount Dennis focuses its efforts on supporting the youth population in the area, as well as residents coming together to organize activities in both the Emmett Avenue and Trimbee-Oxford sections of Mount Dennis.  Priority setting is a key element of community organizing as it

  1. Community space for residents to meet and to participate in community programs,
  2. Employment opportunities (for both youth and adults)
  3. Social activities for residents (adults and youth)  to connect with each other
  4. More programs for children and youth
