2024 Call for Nominations to the Social Planning Toronto Board of Directors

Social Planning Toronto is a non-profit, charitable community organization that works to advance an equitable, inclusive, and accessible Toronto – shaped by the diversity of its residents and rooted in social and economic justice. Our work challenges inequity in our city – through knowledge generation, debate, civic engagement, advocacy, and collaboration – to spark social and policy change.

The Opportunity

Social Planning Toronto (SPT) is currently seeking 3 volunteers to join its 10-member volunteer Board of Directors who are committed to working towards social and economic justice, a more equitable Toronto, and the mission and values of the organization. The candidates ideally have lived experience of racialization, racism and/or other forms of social and economic marginalization as well as one or more of the following areas of expertise:

  • Governance and non-profit management experience
  • Non-profit financial planning and fundraising experience
  • Leadership in policy and systems change work, with a focus on equity, anti-racism and social/economic justice

We strive to have a Board that reflects the full diversity of the city, including people who come from neighbourhoods across all of Toronto. We welcome applicants who identify as Indigenous, Black, people of colour, women, living with a disability and/or living with low-income. Candidates must either live, work or volunteer in the City of Toronto and be eighteen years of age or older.

Individuals who are nominated must agree to stand for membership election to the SPT Board. Board members are expected to:

  • Commit to 5-8 hours per month for a 3-year term.
  • Prepare for, attend and fully participate in Board meetings, Board committee meetings, Working Group meetings or other Board-related responsibilities.
  • Participate in virtual and in-person meetings.

The Process

Interested individuals can notify Kanaka Kulendran, Director of Organizational Systems, of their interest by email at [email protected] by August 6, 2024 at 9:00 AM and must include:

  • a copy of their CV (attached in a Word or PDF document)
  • a paragraph or two describing why you are interested, how you can contribute to the SPT Board of Directors, and anything you want to highlight about yourself and your experience related the SPT board recruitment priorities identified above (200 words maximum)

Candidates who are a good fit with our work will be contacted for an interview with our Nominations Committee.

The Nominations Committee and current Board of Directors will recommend candidates for the 2024-2025 Board Term, based on the needs of the organization at this time. Those candidates will be presented to the membership in advance of our Annual General Meeting (September 24, 2024). Members attending the AGM will vote to approve the slate of candidates proposed by the Board.

All nominees will receive an acknowledgement.
