Social Planning Toronto and The Neighbourhood Group Community Services co-authored an op-ed published in the Toronto Star on February 3, 2026 with the headline, "Doug Ford called supervised consumption sites “the worst thing ever.” New research shows why he’s wrong."

Recent research from McGill University used Toronto Police Service data to track crime rates within 400 metres of nine supervised consumption sites (SCS) across the city of Toronto. Though some areas saw initial spikes in break-and-enters and auto thefts following the opening of SCS, these trends quickly reversed course. Overall, the study found that assaults, auto thefts, break-and-enters, robberies, and thefts over $5,000 either remained stable or declined after sites were implemented.
